The Villa di Cafaggiolo is one of the oldest Medici villas and looks more like a castle than a villa, with fortifications and a defensive tower in the medieval style. This is due to a refit completed in the 1450s for Cosimo de'Medici, also known as Cosimo il Vecchio or Cosimo The Elder. Cosimo commissioned the architect Michelozzo to restructure the villa, which was acquired by the Medici family in the 14th century, and transform it into a grander summer residence with a garden.
Michelozzo also redesigned other Medici villas, including the nearby Villa del Trebbio and the Villa di Careggi. Lorenzo the Magnificent, who spent part of his childhood in Cafaggiolo, held meetings of his "Neoplatonic Academy" with leading writers, sculptors, and painters at the Villa di Careggi.
